Our Philosophy and Approach
Rhyeman brings together design, art and archaeology, guided by a research-led, curatorial approach. Our background in art history informs how we select and present objects, with close attention to their formal qualities, material authenticity and historical context. In this way, we present a carefully considered selection of objects that have shaped - or have the potential to shape - visual and material culture.
We focus primarily on iconic twentieth-century design, chosen not only for their formal or functional excellence, but also for the stories they carry. We are fascinated by the context in which a design was created - the spirit of its time, the intentions behind its making and the craft involved. Equally important is a piece’s life beyond its creation: provenance and patina play a central role in our selection process. Signs of use and ageing are never concealed or corrected; they are valued as an essential part of a piece’s character and soul.
Particular attention is given to designers who have played a decisive role in shaping design history, including José Zanine Caldas, Lina Bo Bardi, Poul Henningsen and Gio Ponti. Alongside these established figures, we also seek out furniture by lesser-known or anonymous makers. Our choices are guided by inventiveness, material quality, craftsmanship and patina: we look for top-tier works, whether they carry an iconic name or remain anonymous.
Rhyeman chooses not to present design in isolation, but to combine it with art and archaeology. This approach creates connections across materials, cultures, periods and typologies. We believe that objects gain meaning when read relationally, resulting in a collection that feels eclectic yet coherent.
Our showroom, located in a restored former furniture factory in Rijmenam, Belgium, reflects this philosophy. It functions as a gallery, workspace and laboratory for modern living, creating an environment that feels lived-in rather than neutral. It is not a white-cube space, but an inhabited setting where all items can interact. We spend our days surrounded by design, art and archaeology, and we invite you to experience this way of living for yourself.
Our Services
Our collection is not the endpoint of our practice; we actively offer expertise and guidance on furniture and object-related questions.
Sourcing
Drawing on our background as art historians, we assist in the search for particular pieces, or propose carefully considered alternatives. As with every object in our collection, we place strong emphasis on provenance, material quality and patina.
In-house Design
We also collaborate closely with skilled craftsmen and specialists across various fields, including metalworking, design, woodworking and upholstery. This allows us to assist in the design and production of bespoke furniture, tailored to specific spatial, functional or aesthetic requirements.
We welcome your inquiries and are pleased to offer guidance on any specific requests.
